Man United fans react to poor performance from Dan James vs Chelsea

Manchester United’s FA Cup dream is over for another year. Unfortunately, the performance on the day wasn’t anywhere near good enough. To a man, the Red Devils underperformed. However, on social media, it was a display from Dan James vs Chelsea that left fans feeling pretty downbeat.

After a stunning start from the Welshman on debut against Chelsea, James’ performance levels have only dropped. Perhaps it’s an overreliance on a young man who is still learning how to adapt to Premier League football. Maybe it’s just that he isn’t good enough. That’s something we’ll need time to make a proper judgement on.

Yesterday was James’ first start post-lockdown. We have to give him some room to shake off the rustiness. For that, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is culpable. It’s tough to ask someone to come in and do it against a Chelsea side who are also on the up.

However, you can’t defend the ball bouncing off him when a simple pass is sent his way, or the fact that his run-making just looked so unintelligent and ordinary for the most part. Simply put, he wasn’t making that Chelsea back line work. It looked far too easy for them.

Last month, we covered a story in which it was claimed that United have ‘no intention’ of loaning out James next season. Suddenly, I’m thinking that may well be the best option for his development… What’s better for him than regular football at a mid-table Premier League side who can offer him week-in-week-out football. Just look at how that’s worked for Dean Henderson.

Personally, I’m of the opinion that the James criticism is harsh. However, I’ll leave you with several United fans who weren’t pleased with the 22-year-old’s display yesterday:

What did you make of the performance from Dan James vs Chelsea? Do you think United fans should cut him some slack? Let us know your thoughts in the comment box below.

  1. Hmm he was really poor but u cant blame him, looking at the formation u dont expect him to do well and i think we have over reliance on him and he have not had more time in this year,so i blame the coach for the defeat,u dont just bring some1 who has not been at his best for couple of months and u expect him to perform well in a game against a top team,a loan spell should be a good1 for him in my opinion,so i dont think he deserves that much criticism
