For Manchester United, it truly was an afternoon to forget. The Red Devils were battered 6-1, on their own turf. Defensively it was an absolute shambles, with Harry Maguire copping plenty of stick for an awful outing vs Spurs.
From first minute to last, our captain was a nervous wreck. He was at fault for the Spurs leveller, before being more than culpable for their second, too.
Maguire’s start to this season can only be described as shambolic and it doesn’t bode well for a man who cost £80million. My main issue with it all is the fact this is nothing new. Big errors have been a part of his game for several months now, stretching back to last season…
Today was probably his worst performance in a United shirt and it couldn’t have come at a worse time. With pressure mounting on him on the field, don’t forget he’s also coping with a legal issue off it. It’s really not an ideal situation for our captain.
All the talk has been about finding him the right partner. It’s fair to say alongside Eric Bailly today, it didn’t go well.
I don’t doubt that his mental frame of mind isn’t in a good place at the moment. However, this international break will be a welcome relief for our captain. He now has a fortnight to go away with England, take a break from the pressure-cooker that is Manchester United and hopefully come back rejuvenated.
As you’d imagine, the United fans were extremely frustrated with the 27-year-old’s poor display and took to Twitter to vent their anger…
