Man United fans have themselves a new defensive idol, as Raphael Varane dropped a top performance on debut vs Wolves.
Well, there’s a reason why they call him Champions League Varane and today, we witnessed it. The Frenchman absolutely bossed it on debut against Wolverhampton Wanderers – putting in a performance that looked like he’d been in this team for years.
This is why you pay the big bucks for an elite level centre-half. This is why having a player like him back there is so, so important. Varane just oozes class and he’s calmness personified. He was undoubtedly one of the main reasons why we won today.
The 28-year-old is Virgil van Dijk-esque in many regards, including the way he can just cruise through games in third gear because he’s so positionally solid and always so aware.
Not only did Varane put in an exquisite defensive display, it was actually his ball into Mason Greenwood that opened up Wolves for the goal. A clean sheet and an assist on debut? You absolutely love it see it.
What’s great now for Varane is that he’s got a chance to continue building the fitness over the next fortnight, before coming back to Manchester to take on Newcastle United at Old Trafford – which will definitely be a different sort of game for the classy Frenchman.
Hopefully, this is just the start of a top class partnership with Harry Maguire. It has certainly started off on the right foot!
As you’d imagine, the United fans would heap the praise on the star who absolutely bossed it vs Wolves. He was top drawer.
