Manchester United reserves looked outstanding last night against Southampton’s side. It was Shola Shoretire who’d impress fans the most, though, with an impeccable U23s performance.
The Red Devils’ youth setup is probably the best in the country right now. From developing the likes of Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood recently, it’s a system that’s absolutely jam-packed with talent.
I could easily pick four or five youngsters who’ll no doubt go on to make a massive impression in the first-team at Old Trafford in the not too distant future. Last night’s 3-1 victory over Southampton’s U23s offered us even another glimpse into an extremely bright future.
It’s Facundo Pellistri making the headlines as he scored his first goal, while Alvaro Fernandez looks like another unreal prospect. For me, though, the star who shone the brightest last night was young Shola Shoretire.
This young man can play. Aged just sixteen(!) and tearing it up at U23 level. In all honesty, that should be all the information you need. It was Shoretire’s unreal pass into Pellistri who helped the Uruguayan on his way to his first Reds goal.
In terms of position, Shoretire is a forward-thinking attacking-midfielder. He loves to break in between the lines, play those defence-splitting passes and he’s always trying to make things happen. He’s very similar to Bruno Fernandes in that regard.
Last night, he was pulling the strings against an excellent Southampton U23s team and it was an absolute privilege watching him work. The scary thing is, Shoretire is only going to get better.
As you’d imagine, United fans were quick to take to Twitter to heap praise on the supremely-gifted 16-year-old who is taking to U23s level by storm. We’ve compiled our best tweets below.
