Fred dropped a disasterclass vs Wolves yesterday, with Man United fans less than happy at his performance.
Well, it wasn’t pretty but Manchester United stuck another three points on the board yesterday away at Molineux. Wolves away has never been an easy fixture and this weekend was more of the same. Credit to the lads who stuck it out and fought for a positive result.
In these close-knit games, it usually comes down to winning the midfield battle. It’s fair to say United lost that from minute one, with our job made harder due to Scott McTominay’s absence.
It was Fred who was called upon to be the defensive midfielder here, though his individual struggles were evident. The Brazilian was careless in possession, too easy to bully off the ball and every time Adama Traore ran at him, he was nothing but a bystander.
If your defensive midfielder keeps getting bypassed so easily, then simply put, he’s not doing his job properly. Like Roy Keane said at half time, what does Fred hang his hat on that he’s so good at? It’s not passing, nor is it defensive astuteness. He’s been here for almost five years now and I’m still not sure what he’s elite at.
I think it’s pretty clear for all to see that our midfield still isn’t good enough. Until that changes, I struggle to see how this side wins titles. With time running out in the transfer window, I just don’t see United investing in that area before the deadline – and unfortunately, that could well be our downfall.
As you’d imagine, United fans were left unimpressed as the 28-year-old struggled badly vs Wolves. Can we really win a title with him in our engine room…?
