Man United following the development of Nuno Mendes, £40.6m release clause

Manchester United Football Club have been linked with a whole host of fresh faces this summer. The latest one to add to the list? Nuno Mendes.

Left-back has often been a problem position for the Red Devils. This season, though, United actually have themselves a competition for the starting berth. Both Luke Shaw and Brandon Williams have pushed each other to that next level. However, the question remains, are either good enough to play in a title-winning side?

Well at the very least, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is exploring the possibility of adding another left-sided defender to the squad. The story comes from A Bola (Monday print edition), translated via Sport Witness.

They’re claiming that United are amongst the clubs who have been ‘following the development’ of the talented 18-year-old, who currently plies his trade for Sporting Lisbon.

Right now, Mendes has a £40.6m (€45m) release clause, which was handed to him right after his first start. His current deal runs until 2025, with Sporting seemingly realising what a special talent they have on their hands.

Man United interested in Nuno Mendes

Over the last couple of months in the first-team following his breakthrough, Mendes has gone from strength-to-strength. That explains interest in him from United, Liverpool and Juventus, which tells you everything you need to know about his ability.

United have an excellent rapport with Sporting. From Cristiano Ronaldo to Bruno Fernandes, with a little Luis Nani sandwiched in the middle… I’d like to think that positive relationship puts us in the driver’s seat if multiple clubs decide to meet the £40m price-tag.

I’m not going to sit here and wax lyrical about Mendes as I’ve hardly seen him play. However, Solskaer’s work in the transfer market has been superb. He has my full backing until he starts giving us a reason not to trust him.

For now, though, it’s just interest and there’s no concrete offer on the table. That may change if Mendes continues to develop and grow as a footballer.

Would Nuno Mendes be a signing who can make an instant impact? Or one for the future? Let us know your thoughts in the comment box below.
