Man United have emerged as the side in the driver’s seat when it comes to signing Jurrien Timber.
I’d argue that the need for a new centre-back is probably Manchester United’s biggest going into the summer transfer window.
Erik ten Hag will have watched this Red Devils side ship careless goal after careless goal, with United amongst the worst teams in the Premier League when it comes to conceding.
It’s quite remarkable, given how much this club has spent on new centre-halves, that we continue to struggle in that area. Some of it is down to poor defensive organisation. A large chunk of it is individual mistakes. That has to change if we’re to have genuine trophy aspirations next season.
Well, one link that keeps popping up is Jurrien Timber. The Ajax defender has developed his game under Ten Hag over in the Netherlands. Now, a move to the Theatre of Dreams is being talked up.
According to the usually reliable Jonathan Shrager, there’s a ‘belief’ that United are ‘currently the frontrunners’ to sign the defender. Presumably this summer.
The 20-year-old would bring familiarity for the manager. The importance of that cannot be understated. Ten Hag knows his strengths and weaknesses. That’s massively important.
Timber isn’t a player I’m all too clued up on, though he has started regularly in a title-winning side in 2021/22. He’d bring that winning mentality and confidence with him to Manchester. You’d also imagine he wouldn’t cost a massive amount of money, either.
My one concern would be Ajax’s willingness to let Ten Hag poach a player as it’d be a double blow for the Dutch club having already lost their manager to United.
Perhaps they’d dig their heels in a little more and refuse to let Timber go.
