Man United handed boost in Joao Neves pursuit

Man United could have been given a leg up in their pursuit of Benfica midfielder, Joao Neves.

Manchester United are looking to improve their squad in the transfer market over the coming months, though that may be easier said than done given the limited funds available to the Red Devils. FFP and Premier League Profit & Sustainability rules will almost certainly curb spending.

Among the players who the Reds could look to spend a large chunk of their transfer budget on is Joao Neves. The Portugal international has consistently been linked with an Old Trafford switch over the last twelve months.

It has recently been claimed that United had an offer of around £50m rejected for the teenager. A new bid is said to be on the horizon.

Well, Portuguese media outlet Record (subscription required), with BBC Gossip Column relaying the information, have provided United with a potential boost in pursuit of the midfielder’s signature.

According to the story, Neves has rejected a new contract offer from Benfica, with the 19-year-old now seemingly keeping his options open.

I’m sure he’s more than aware of the interest in him from United, and no doubt other European powerhouses, with the midfielder now hesitant to commit his future to Benfica.

In terms of statement signings, a move for Neves would be right up there for me. He feels like the perfect complimentary player to Kobbie Mainoo in midfield, while he’ll have an excellent rapport with countryman Bruno Fernandes.

Yes, this would represent a large chunk of the budget, though Neves is a player who could offer genuine longevity to this United midfield. I’m absolutely convinced he’d be well worth it.
