Earlier on in the month, rumours emerged suggesting that Manchester United were ready to challenge fellow Premier League sides in pursuit of Stefan de Vrij.
Now, it looks as though the Red Devils’ chances at signing the centre-half have become much more realistic, as his agent has confirmed that De Vrij will be leaving Lazio at the end of the season.
‘It’s a decision made after many months,’ his agent said, per The Metro. ‘There’s a limit to everything. ‘We will say goodbye at the end of the season.”
The Dutchman had been in talks about a new contract with the Serie A club but those have seemingly broken down, with the 26-year-old seemingly looking for a new challenge.
United’s centre-back issues have been well documented. Jose Mourinho seriously has to work on improving that area of the field as soon as possible, as we’ve seen some horrendous displays from the likes of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling recently.
De Vrij will be a free agent in the summer meaning that United could get his hands on the centre-half for absolutely nothing. If there’s ever a gamble to take, it’d be now. Heck, he surely cannot do any worse than the aforementioned English duo, can he?
