Man United have AS Roma winger, Nicolo Zaniolo, on their transfer radar.
The January transfer window was quite a disappointment for Manchester United fans.
In the end, though, I guess the lack of signings should have been expected. After all, we have an interim manager in charge while it’s hard to buy players without a new manager in place. Purely because you have no clue whether the new permanent boss will want to work with the potential signings made in January.
The summer window is different, though. I’d like to think that the 20-time Premier League champions will have a manager in place relatively early on – giving said gaffer plenty of time to mould this squad into one that fits his image.
All that said, United are still being linked with new signings left, right and centre. The latest name to be linked with an Old Trafford switch is AS Roma winger, Nicolo Zaniolo.
The story comes from Calciomercato, with Sport Witness providing the translation. It’s claimed that United have a ‘strong interest’ in signing the 22-year-old winger, who is impressing under Jose Mourinho in the Serie A right now.
Zaniolo’s contract expires in 2024, while his short-term future definitely lies with AS Roma. As things stand, the player’s agent is ‘often in Rome’, presumably for contract talks.
Calciomercato claims that United ‘continue the pressure and await new developments’, though they face competition for his signature. As things stand it’s Juventus who are in ‘pole position’ to sign Zaniolo.
To me, this already feels like a case of one that’s going to get away. Juventus is always an attractive option for any Serie A player with ability. While United’s first port of call will be hiring a new manager. Only when that guy is in place will the wheels start turning on the transfer front. By which point, Zaniolo may already be playing his football away from Rome.
