Well there you have it, Man United accept defeat in their pursuit of Frenkie de Jong…
For anyone who has been following Manchester United’s summer transfer window, you’ll know there has always been one key target; Frenkie de Jong.
The Dutch midfielder was immediately earmarked as the central player who can change the game and carry out Erik ten Hag’s plans perfectly.
At times, it looked like De Jong would be a sure-fire acquisition. On other days, it felt like a desperate attempt to try and secure an unobtainable footballer.
De Jong’s preference has always been to remain in Barcelona, meaning it was going to be tough for a club without Champions League football on the table to convince him to join them.
Well, journalist Ben Jacobs may have just given us the clearest indication that a move to acquire De Jong is dead in the water.
Jacobs took to Twitter earlier today, stating that United have ‘all but given up’ in pursuit of their top transfer target for the 2022 summer window.
Now, it looks like Chelsea are still pushing hard to sign the Barca man, though he will not take a pay cut if he’s forced out of the Camp Nou.
Honestly, watching De Jong go to another Premier League side would be an absolute kick in the teeth so, at this point, I really do hope he remains at Barca.
For United, it’s now about moving on to other targets. Adrien Rabiot looks to be on the way in over the next few days, though as we understand it, another midfielder is still likely to be acquired.
Our choices would be Youri Tielemans or Ruben Neves, purely due to their Premier League experience.
