Man United have already had talks with midfielder Enzo Fernandez

Man United have added River Plate midfielder, Enzo Fernandez, to their list of transfer targets.

Erik ten Hag has a massive job on his hands. Manchester United have been majorly struggling this season and a large part of the reason why is due to underperforming players.

All over the field, this squad needs work. The Old Trafford club have made some poor signings that don’t fit with the mantra of what the manager wants to achieve. That has to change going into the 2022/23 season.

I’d like to think that the club is now planning to bring in players that fit Ten Hag’s system. One area of major concern is midfield, particularly with Paul Pogba looking set to depart.

Apparently, United are one of the sides who ‘closely follow’ the 21-year-old central midfielder, with Real Madrid also showing an interest.

It’s also claimed that both clubs ‘have already’ held talks with the River Plate man, though no official offer has been made at this stage.

Fernandez, born in 2021, has seemingly been identified as someone who can come in and fill the void left by Pogba – though I’m sure the likes of James Garner and Hannibal Mejbri will have something to say about that.

There’s always a risk when signing young South Americans. More often than not, these lads need time to adjust and adapt to Premier League football, while at this point, United need someone who can come in and compete straight away.

Personally, I’d much prefer to see our academy lads given a chance, assuming United aren’t willing to spend big money on signing a midfielder who is already playing in a top-five European league.

It’s also down to Ten Hag. We have to ensure we’re only bringing in players that he wants to work with. If we’re not consistently double-checking what the Dutchman wants, then we’re already setting him up for failure.
