Manchester United’s summer transfer window eventually turned into a pretty good one. The Old Trafford club acquired quality players in several areas, though Erik ten Hag did miss out on his number one target; Frenkie de Jong.

The Red Devils spent practically the whole summer pushing hard to bring the Dutchman to the Theatre of Dreams, though the preference of the player was always to remain in Catalonia.

That led United elsewhere, with Casemiro becoming the midfielder who’d join.

However, United haven’t given up hope on acquiring the Dutchman, with a January move for De Jong already being talked up.

It’s Sport with the claim, thanks to Sport Witness for their translation. On Friday, they wrote that the wages De Jong is owed ‘continue to create resentment’ between the Barca board and player.

On top of that, Barca manager Xavi is still struggling to fit De Jong into the starting XI on a regular basis. That’s because the gaffer wants to play a different style of football to one that suits the Dutchman.

De Jong is yet to negotiate a reduction on his salary which is what Barca wanted, while an exit from the Nou Camp still isn’t under consideration – at least until the player is given what he’s owed.

This is where United come in. It’s claimed that the Old Trafford club have already made an ‘important offer’ to sign the player in the January transfer window. Chelsea have also done the same.

Sport claim that, despite the complexity of the issue, a possible winter window move away cannot be ruled out.

Old Trafford Faithful’s verdict

For United, this may be an uphill battle. Chelsea has Champions League football on offer. The Red Devils do not. If that proves to be the deciding factor, then it may be tough.

Honestly, I think it’s probably best for United to move away from De Jong and forget about signing him. The midfielder clearly doesn’t want to be here. I don’t see that changing between now and January.
