Man United rumours to Saul Niguez just will not go away.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could probably do with one or two more signings this summer, if we’re genuinely serious about challenging for major honours.
The 1-1 draw to Southampton highlighted just how light we are in some areas, namely midfield. In Scott McTominay’s absence, both Fred and Nemanja Matic serious struggled to make an impact, enter Saul Niguez.
We’ve been consistently linked with a move for the Spaniard all summer, with the Atletico Madrid man seeing his name up in lights once again.
This time, the scoop comes from Fabrizio Romano, who states that Saul is set to leave his current club.
Apparently, United ‘have asked’ for the midfielder, who is on their transfer wishlist alongside Eduardo Camavinga. Furthermore, Saul is deemed ‘ready’ for a PL move.
The problem? Chelsea are also keen and they’ve opened talks ‘days ago’. The Stamford Bridge club have actually gone as far as tabling an official bid, which is a loan move with an option to buy.
It goes without saying, Saul would be a significant upgrade on pretty much our whole midfield outside of Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba. This is a signing that’d offer Solskjaer even more flexibility in a key area of the field.
Although Chelsea have made an initial loan offer, if United want this move to happen badly enough, you’d imagine they could swoop in with a buy outright deal which could edge us ahead in the race.
United’s stance has been pretty clear, though. They’ll have to sell some players before they buy, which is hard given the massive wages that several of the Reds’ out-of-favour stars are currently on; Jesse Lingard being the prime example.
Sadly, as of right now, I don’t see United being able to generate the funds to sign anyone else this summer.
