Brandon Williams has apparently been informed he can leave if a club tries to sign the full-back.
Manchester United Football Club are going to head in a totally different direction under Erik ten Hag.
The Dutchman takes charge of his first pre-season in just under a weeks’ time, with the former Ajax manager ready to get stuck in and turn United’s fortunes around.
Thus far, no signings have been made which is worrying given how thin our squad is looking right now. However, there’s a good chance United are still trying to clear out the fringe players who just aren’t going to be given game time over the next twelve months.
Well, one player whose future remains up in the air is Brandon Williams. The Mancunian spent last season on loan at Norwich City – and had an excellent spell with the Canaries.
However, according to the usually reliable Jonathan Shrager, United ‘have informed’ the 21-year-old he can leave if an offer comes in for him.
As things stand, United cannot guarantee first XI football for Williams, though they would like Williams to stay and fight for his place.
According to Shrager, he believes that William will try to take on that challenge and impress Ten Hag during pre-season as he loves United.
I can never fault Williams’ attitude. And it’s easy to forget that not too long ago, he was starting games regularly ahead of Luke Shaw. The talent is so obviously there for the Englishman, though it all comes down to whether he fits in line with what Ten Hag wants.
Another factor is potential incoming signings. If United go out there and sign a left-back, amid rumours they’re keen on signing Tyrell Malacia, it could make things even tougher for Williams.
Honestly, I’d love to see Williams stick around. His versatility is a major selling point, having the ability to play either as the right or left-back.
The fact that he’s United born and bred also plays to Williams’ advantage. I guess in the end, it’s going to come down to what Williams wants. If he’s happy being utilised as a rotational option, then I’d fully expect to see him stay and play his part at Old Trafford in the 2022/23 season.
