Man United have apparently begun talks with Benfica over a possible move to sign Darwin Nunez.
Today was undoubtedly a busy day at the Theatre of Dreams. Manchester United welcomed Erik ten Hag to the club, with the Dutchman seemingly eager to get going.
The 52-year-old talked a good game and certainly looked the part. I, for one, am excited to kickstart this new era.
There’s no doubt big money will be spent by the Old Trafford club this summer, with the 20-time Premier League champions needing to majorly overhaul this playing squad.
One name that keeps being linked with a potential United switch is SL Benfica striker, Darwin Nunez.
Once again, the Argentine’s name is back in the headlines. Apparently, United have ‘initiated contact’ with both Benfica and his agent in regards to potentially signing the forward, who scored 34 goals this term.
The Reds, understandably, are trying to gauge what sort of money it would take to prise the striker away from the Portuguese club this summer. It won’t be easy, mind, with Nunez really making a name for himself over this last year, turning the heads of several European giants.
Check out what journalist Ryan Taylor told GiveMeSport here:
“I do sort of question where United’s priorities lie; it’s probably a striker to help Ronaldo.
“So, Darwin Nunez, I know he’s a player definitely that United like, and they’ve initiated contact with Benfica and his agent to sort of gauge what kind of price tag would be enough to get him
Although there’s always risk involved with signing any player, us United fans always feel comfortable when we dip our toes into the Portuguese waters.
Time and time again we’ve had massive success when buying from the Primeira Liga. Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo, to name a couple.
Competition in Nunez is going to be ridiculously high. Honestly, this could end our pursuit of the 22-year-old before it even gets going. We have no Champions League football on offer. Other clubs could dangle that carrot.
There would also be some doubt about playing time. With Cristiano Ronaldo leading the line here in Manchester, it’s not a guarantee that Nunez would start week-in-week-out.
All that said, it’s good to see United are putting the feelers out there nice and early. After all, we’re going to need to bring in several new faces this summer if the club are intent on being competitive in 2022/23.
