Man United have ‘knocked on the door’ for Atletico midfielder Saul: report

Man United have been linked with Saul Niguez before. Apparently, he’s still on the radar.

The Atletico Madrid midfielder won La Liga for the first time this season but apparently, he’s determined to leave his current club.

According to Marca, United have ‘knocked on the door’ to sign the 26-year-old midfielder. With Saul wanting to take ‘another direction in his career’.

United aren’t the only interested party, though, with Juventus trying to take him to Turin ‘strongly’. It’s also claimed that clubs from the ‘most powerful leagues’ have ‘set their eyes’ on Saul.

This isn’t the first time the player has wanted a transfer away, though in 2019, it was deemed there were no ‘substantial offers’. Atleti’s stance could well have changed since then.

At this point, Atletico Madrid are willing to give Saul a move, though the €150m release clause could be a problem for any potential buyer – particularly in the midst of a pandemic.

Midfield may be a small need for the Old Trafford club, with Fred failing to justify his £50m+ price tag for the most part. However, Saul’s game is more attack-based and I’m not sure that’s exactly what the Red Devils are after right now. You have Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba and Donny van de Beek who can do that job.

That’s not to take away from Saul as a footballer. He’s a cracking individual who was integral during Atletico’s La Liga title win. At this point, I just don’t think it’s wise to spend that sort of money on a player who’ll dip in and out of the starting line-up.
