Man United have been long-term admirers of Wolves midfielder, Ruben Neves.
Erik ten Hag has had his sights set on Frenkie de Jong ever since he walked through the door at Old Trafford.
Thus far, Manchester United’s pursuit of the Dutchman has been unsuccessful, with little-to-no progress being made whatsoever.
Having alternatives in the event that disaster strikes always seemed like a smart idea, particularly when it’s heavily believed that De Jong’s dream scenario is remaining at the Camp Nou.
Well, Sky Sports claim that United are now ‘considering alternatives’ to De Jong, with one Premier League midfielder viewed as exactly that.
According to their report, United have a ‘long-standing interest’ in 25-year-old midfielder, Ruben Neves. The Wolves man has made over 200 appearances for the Midlands outfit, scoring 24 times.
That interest stems from his ‘stylistic profile, incredible passing range, a threat in terms of goalscoring and he controls the tempo really well’, according to Sky Sports’ Melissa Reddy.
In terms of value, Wolves would like at least £60million to part with the Portugal international, who has been a key cog in their starting XI ever since joining in 2017.
Neves’ Premier League experience is undoubtedly his biggest selling point. He’s someone who could slot straight into the United line-up from day one, while the tactical fit feels nigh-on perfect.
Obviously, there’s still plenty of time left in the window, so I’d fully expect to see United do all they can to bring De Jong in. Though I don’t think it’ll be long before the plan changes and the Reds start pressing hard to bring in someone like Neves instead.
Either way, the need to sign at least one top-quality midfielder is absolutely there. We cannot go into the season without replacing either Nemanja Matic or Paul Pogba.
