All the talk recently has been about Manchester United potentially going big on a Jadon Sancho or Jack Grealish. Well, that may no longer be the case…
After a pretty poor defensive showing against Bournemouth last time out, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s focus may well switch back to the centre-half position.
That’s the latest information from ESPN anyway, who state that United could switch their attention to signing a new defender.
Apparently, the Reds could look to ‘divert funds earmarked for Jack Grealish or Donny van de Beek’ on a new centre-half to play alongside Harry Maguire.
Furthermore, the Premier League duo of Nathan Ake and Tyrone Mings are ‘in the frame’ as potential options, along with AC Milan’s Alessio Romagnoli.
In terms of depth, United have options. It’s just that two of those guys (Rojo, Smalling) aren’t currently at the club, while another two (Jones, Tuanzebe) are both out injured. Eric Bailly is another who has often been plagued by treatment table woes.
The only players United can really count upon in that area is Victor Lindelof and the aforementioned Maguire, though the former is currently nursing an injury problem of his own!
I wouldn’t be wholly against the Reds signing some quality in that area. However, it’d have to be a proven, world-class, speedy centre-half. Let’s face it, Maguire is going nowhere but he’s not the quickest. Give him someone fast who can cover the ground alongside him and you’ve got the perfect combo.
In terms of these names, I must admit I’m feeling largely underwhelmed. Ake and Mings are playing for two teams amongst those with the leakiest defences in the Premier League. Romagnoli could work, though the lack of Premier League experience worries me…
