Manchester United have several players with winding down contracts this summer. Amongst those is Juan Mata. The loveable Spaniard has drifted in and out of the team this season, which initially led me to think the club would be willing to see the 30-year-old walk away.
However, that’s apparently not the case. His father, Juan Mata Senior, has been speaking to the media about his son’s situation; and admitted that Mata has in fact been offered a new contract.
He did also add that nothing is agreed although Mata is ‘very happy’ with the offer to renew, while interest from Champions League teams is still on the table.
“Manchester United have offered to renew us, we are very happy,” he told Cadena SER, translated by Sky Sports.
“But there are proposals from Champions League teams.
“Spain, maybe, but today is not the day to talk, it is not yet decided.”
Whatever happens with this one I personally wouldn’t be too fussed either way. Mata is a likeable bloke but what he does off the field is far better than the displays on it.
Ever since he came to Old Trafford in 2014, United have always utilised him incorrectly. Rather than giving him a real chance to prove his worth as a #10, the Spaniard has often been deployed out wide which is a role that doesn’t suit his strengths.
With that in mind, it probably makes more sense to let him walk rather than offering Mata huge money to stick around and remain nothing more than a squad player.
Honestly, though, I don’t think we’ve given the player enough reason to stay and I feel he’ll be playing his football back in Spain next season.
