Manchester United have certainly headed in a new direction under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer; both on and off the field.
One player who was utilised heavily under Jose Mourinho, but hasn’t played under Solskjaer is Antonio Valencia. Now, United have a big decision to make regarding his future.
According to the Manchester Evening News, the Red Devils have just one month to work out whether to offer the 33-year-old a new contract. Come March’s end, the option to trigger a one-year extension runs out; this meaning Valencia could walk away for free in the summer.
Right now, I’m not sure it makes sense to hand him a new deal. This is a player who has been a marvellous servant for United, and although it’ll be sad to see him leave, the time feels correct.
In the past, this is a player who used to buccaneer up and down that right-hand side, but recently, Valencia just hasn’t had the legs to do that, plus he’s picking up injuries more frequently.
Let him go out on a high as it’s the very least he deserves. Why keep him around to sit on the bench or disappoint the fans when he actually does play? It just doesn’t make sense.
