Man United seemingly have a deal in place with Antony, as the Red Devils now look to agree on a transfer fee with Ajax.
Erik ten Hag’s plan to surround himself with familiarity has been clear from the outset. Frenkie de Jong was the top transfer target, while a move for Antony followed closely behind.
The Brazilian, who impressed under Manchester United’s new Dutch manager last season, directly contributed to over 20 goals for the Eredivisie outfit last term.
However, acquiring Antony from Ajax is proving to be problematic. Mostly due to their high asking price. At the end of the day, they do not want to part with the tricky winger, particularly after already losing several key players this summer.
Just when we all thought a deal for Antony was completely impossible, United are refusing to give up. The latest update in the saga comes from O Globo, with a little help from @utdreport for the translation.
Apparently, United have reached an agreement with the player, presumably on personal terms, contract length and various other clauses.
Now comes the problematic bit; finalising a fee with Ajax.
Apparently, United are set to offer £80m (€94m) to the Dutch club in an effort to complete the signing.
It goes without saying, that’s a colossal amount of money. In terms of monetary value, United are probably overpaying for Antony. However, given the current circumstances, the club have no other choice but to do exactly that.
Will Ajax even accept this bid? Who knows… I’d imagine that they’ll never get an offer this high for Antony again, so they’ll definitely consider it. I guess it comes down to whether they feel they can adequately replace the Brazilian before the window slams shut.
It also seems like Antony is willing to do his part. He didn’t train over the weekend, while he also missed out on Ajax’s squad as they beat Sparta Rotterdam 1-0 on Sunday.
