Man United are discussing a possible move to sign Bayern Munich defender, Matthijs de Ligt.
In an ideal world, Manchester United Football Club will sign two centre-backs this summer, with the Red Devils having problems aplenty in that area of the field last term. Since then, it has come to light that Raphael Varane will leave the club, making the situation back there even more dire.
Several names have been linked with an Old Trafford switch already, with Jarrad Branthwaite’s name the one that seems to be popping up most often.
However, German journalist Florian Plettenberg has recently thrown a new name into the mix; Matthijs de Ligt. According to his information, United have ‘started internal discussions’ about a potential move to sign the 24-year-old centre-back.
It’s stated that the Dutchman is on the Reds’ ‘list’, primarily because of Erik ten Hag.
Although no concrete moves have been made yet, United are gathering more information about De Ligt, in the event that he does leave Bavaria this summer.
In terms of asking price, around £42m (50m euro) should be enough to get the deal done to sign the former Ajax defender.

De Ligt was being talked up as one of the best centre-halves in the world a few years ago. He’s probably not at that level right now, but he’s still young enough to ensure his name is back in that group of elite players in the not-too-distant future.
For United, he’d represent a definitive upgrade in a position of need. For that reason alone, this would be a worthwhile signing from my point of view. He’d also be cheaper than the aforementioned Branthwaite, while being a better player at this stage in their careers.
I guess it all comes down to whether the player himself wants to leave Bayern. Then, United would have to beat out stiff competition to ensure that De Ligt chooses Old Trafford over several other top European sides.
