Man United are refusing to lie down in their pursuit of Frenkie de Jong.
Erik ten Hag is trying to surround himself with familiarity. Manchester United have been leaked with several current Ajax players, while others who have previously played for the Dutchman are also popping up in the headlines pretty often.
One man who seems to be linked more than most is Frenkie de Jong. The Dutch midfielder, who currently plies his trade for FC Barcelona, is high on United’s priority list.
The stories do make sense. You couple United’s need for a new, top-quality midfielder with FC Barcelona’s desire to generate some transfer funds and you have yourselves the perfect transfer rumour.
Well, Goal have the latest update for us. They claim that, despite learning De Jong’s preference is to stay at Barca, United ‘haven’t given up’ on trying to sign the midfielder.
De Jong is a ‘leading target’ for Ten Hag, with the new United boss aiming to make five signings during this current transfer window.
On top of that, De Jong has been ‘strongly admired’ within the club, while United have also extensively watched the 25-year-old, during both his time at Ajax and Barca.
With Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic both set to depart, the need for a high level midfielder is there. However, as soon as De Jong admitted that he’d prefer to stay with Barca and wasn’t really interested in a United switch, our pursuit of the Dutchman should end there.
I find it hard to believe that United, without Champions League football on the table, are going to be able to convince De Jong to make the move to Old Trafford. Plus, this club should bow down to no single player, however talented they are.
