Man United are looking to snatch Sven Botman from right under AC Milan’s nose…
It goes without saying, signing a new central defender is amongst Manchester United’s biggest needs going into the summer.
Raphael Varane has been pretty hit and miss, while Harry Maguire’s struggles have only grew over the last twelve months.
Erik ten Hag will want to build a side from the back. After all, you’re not challenging for major honours when you’re amongst the worst in the Premier league at conceding both goals and chances.
Enter, Sven Botman. United have been linked with a move to sign the Dutchman in the past, with the rumours popping up again over the last 24 hours or so.
The story comes from Football Insider, who claim that United are ‘hijacking’ AC Milan’s move to sign the 22-year-old this summer.
Apparently, the Reds are ‘exploring’ a deal to sign the centre-half, with AC Milan in advanced talks over a £25m move to sign Botman.
Botman’s name apparently came up in talks with Erik ten Hag, Mitchell van der Gaag and John Murtough as they look to shape their squad for the 2022/23 season. Now it’s thought that preliminary talks between United and Lille will take place over a potential move to acquire the centre-half.
It goes without saying, United will have to act quickly to get this move done, given AC Milan are already pretty far into discussions to acquire the Dutchman.
To me, this feels like Ten Hag trying to surround himself with familiarity. The Netherland’s compatriots worked together at Ajax, with United’s new manager identifying Botman as someone who can fulfil that left-sided centre-half role.
The £25m price-tag feels pretty good value for a man who could come straight into our side, though there is always risk involved when buying players with no Premier League experience.
