Raphael Varane picked up an injury in the Manchester derby, leaving Man United with a serious selection headache.

Manchester United Football Club find themselves licking their wounds this morning, after a derby day defeat that jolted the whole club right back down to earth.

The 6-3 final score wasn’t the only bad news, with United’s spirits dampened further by an injury to Raphael Varane – who had formed quite the partnership with Lisandro Martinez over the last six weeks or so…

Varane saw the ball whacked against his ankle with real velocity and you could see his leg really whip back as a result. Immediately, the Frenchman went down to the floor.

Now, L’Equipe have confirmed the injury blow, adding that the 29-year-old is suffering with an ankle sprain.

the extent of the issue isn’t yet known, with the Reds facing a nervous wait. Apparently, the club have to wait for the swelling to go down before Varane can undergo further tests, which are likely to take place today.

You’d imagine Varane will be out for at least a few weeks at the very minimum, which is obviously concerning.

Is Raphael Varane injury prone?

Nobody is out here denying Rapha’s ability. When fit, there’s not many better in the country. Sadly, last season, he spent far too much time on the treatment table.

Now, there’s a chance he’ll be back in the medical room until after the World Cup…

The Frenchman is no doubt worrying about whether he can represent his country in Qatar next month, while United have the issue of replacing Varane in the XI. Victor Lindelof will be the short-term solution due to an injury to club captain Harry Maguire. However, you’d imagine the Three Lions player will come back into the team once healthy again.

Do you think this Raphael Varane injury opens the door for Harry Maguire? Let us know your thoughts in the comment box below.
