Man United have now held their first discussions over a potential deal to sign Ivan Toney before Friday’s transfer deadline.

Manchester United have added a forward to the squad this summer in the form of Joshua Zirkzee, though the Dutchman himself has referred to himself as a ‘9.5’ rather than an out-and-out number 9.

As a result, Erik ten Hag could be tempted to double dip in the forward market before Friday’s deadline, with Ivan Toney‘s name once again popping up in the media.

It’s The Standard with the claim, stating that United have now held ‘initial talks’ over a late move to sign the prolific striker. However, a move to Chelsea remains his priority at this point in time.

Toney has ‘made clear’ his intention to leave Brentford this summer, with the Bees now being forced to settle for a deal for considerably less than their initial £50m asking price due to the fact his contract expires next summer.

Chelsea are mulling over a bid for Toney, though United have now held ‘preliminary’ conversations with Brentford over a potential deal.

Negotiations are not yet at a serious stage, while United are yet to make a formal offer, as Brentford hoping for a bidding war that could allow them to secure £40m for Toney’s signature.

My first thought is the fact that he prefers a move to Chelsea should instantly shut this deal down. If he doesn’t want to be here, then United should look elsewhere. INEOS are intent on steering clear of those signings who are only making the move to Old Trafford for the money – and Toney definitely falls into that category.

It’s a shame as he is a true goalscorer and that’s exactly what United are crying out for right now, particularly as Rasmus Hojlund remains injured.

I also struggle to see where United would find the money from…
