Time is running out for Romelu Lukaku, with Manchester United set to jet out on pre-season tour this Sunday without a transfer away anywhere close to completion.
According to the Evening Standard, Lukaku still doesn’t know whether he’ll fly out with the Red Devils squad to Perth, Australia. The Belgium international has made it clear that he wants a move, while he’s also seeking talks with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this week.
United’s stance hasn’t changed. They’re prepared to sell Lukaku, but only if their £80million cash valuation is met. Right now, Inter Milan cannot afford to pay that, hence why they’ve made various loan offers with obligatory purchase fees later down the line.
But, to his credit, Lukaku will not force a move and he’ll remain professional.
However, United deserve praise too, Solskjaer has already started identifying potential replacements for the 26-year-old.
Atop his list is a pair of Ligue 1 forwards. Apparently, Lyon’s Moussa Dembele has been ‘watched’ while United are among a host of clubs to enquire about Lille’s Nicolas Pepe.
I’m a huge Dembele fan and I think he’s only going to get better as the Frenchman continues to develop and grow. Pepe would be somewhat of an unknown quantity, but his biggest selling point is versatility.
What’s most important is to ensure United find someone who’s fine with spending time on the bench every now and then as Marcus Rashford is likely to continue as the first-choice striker going into the 19/20 campaign.
I still believe it’s going to be tough for Lukaku to leave this summer. I think he believes that, too, and that’s why he’s remaining so professional throughout it all.
