Man United view Matthijs de Ligt as their number one option in the centre-back transfer market.
We’ve beaten this drum time and time again, but Manchester United conceded the fifteenth-most goals in the Premier League last season. That has to change.
Be it due to playing personnel or poor tactics, something has to happen to improve our fortunes in that area of the field.
New signings are needed in our opinion. We’ve watched the likes of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof make massive individual errors every single week. hence why the Old Trafford club are consistently being linked with moves to bring in new centre-backs.
The name that has popped up most often is Jurrien Timber. I guess it was always an easy link to make, given the fact that it was Erik ten Hag who gave the young Dutchman his chance at Ajax.
Well over the last 24 hours, United have been linked with a move for another Dutch centre-half. This time? Matthijs de Ligt. The Reds were rumoured to be keen on De Ligt when he left Ajax for Juventus a few years ago, but the move didn’t come to fruition.
It’s journalist Nicolo Schira with the claim, who states that the 22-year-old has been identified as Man United’s ‘main’ centre-back ‘target’ this summer.
Schira adds that Ten Hag ‘loves’ De Ligt from his time at Ajax, though Juventus do not want to part with the young centre-half. So-much-so that they’re working on a contract renewal which will contain a release clause of over £100m.
De Ligt is still so young, despite the fact that it feels like he has been around forever. He’s already achieved so much in his career, with the Dutchman really just getting started.
There’s no doubt De Ligt would improve our starting line-up the moment he walked through the door. However, spending over £100million on one player, during this window where we need several signings, just doesn’t feel like a smart piece of business.
Factor in Juventus trying to dig their heels in and not lose a key member of their team and this transfer looks like a nigh-on impossible one already.
With all that in mind, a move for Timber still feels more likely for us.
