Manchester United are seemingly looking to add some quality to the flanks next season. Today, a new name has been thrown into the mix…
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll know all the transfer talk surrounding Manchester United has been about Jadon Sancho.
However, COVID-19 continues to play its part. Spending across the board is likely to be limited during the 2020 summer transfer window. Can United really afford a nine-figure fee for Sancho?
Well, apparently not. Unless they sell first… That’s according to Laurie Whitwell in The Athletic. According to the report, the 20-time Premier League champions are looking to limit their net spend to £50m.
Sure, the club can spend more if players are sold, but that’s going to be easier said than done.
With that in mind, United have identified the talented 23-year-old, Ousmane Dembele, as a cheaper Sancho alternative this summer.
The Frenchman joined FC Barcelona in a big-money transfer a few years ago, but it’s fair to say he’s had a torrid time at the Camp Nou. Injuries and poor form is a pretty easy way to get on the bad side of Catalonian football fans…
Barca themselves are also suffering from financial issues due to COVID-19, which suggests to me there’s a real possibility that an Ousmane Dembele transfer could happen this summer.
Although no transfer fee is mentioned, you’d still imagine it’d take more than £50million to prise Dembele away from Barcelona. The Athletic story names all of Alexis Sanchez, Chris Smalling, Jesse Lingard, Diogo Dalot, Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones as potential players who could leave.
Will they fetch large transfer fees? Probably not. However, they’re all on pretty hefty wages and money could certainly be generated.
Is Dembele as good, or reliable as Sancho? No. He does present a different alternative, nor can his talent be denied, but give me the Englishman every single time…
