Man United identify ‘top target’ Gareth Southgate as new head coach after Erik ten Hag

Gareth Southgate is apparently Manchester United’s ‘top target’ as their new head coach.

Manchester United are likelier and likelier to want a new man in charge as this season progresses. Let’s be honest, Erik ten Hag is not getting the results right now.

The Dutchman is struggling. Dressing room confidence is low. Ten Hag has to take the brunt of the blame as the performances have been absolutely dreadful. He’s not an INEOS man, either.

Some believe the decision to sack Ten Hag has already been made. Hence, it’d make sense for the hierarchy to start searching for his replacement. Now, journalist Santi Aouna has provided an update on that front.

Apparently, United have identified their ‘top target’ to replace Ten Hag as manager; Gareth Southgate.

The deal is not agreed yet, but the situation is expected to develop ‘soon’. In an ideal situation, United would like to conclude the deal over the next few weeks, with a view to announcing Southgate as manager after the European Championships this summer.

It’s said that club bosses are ‘convinced’ that the 53-year-old is the right man for the job.

Check out Santi Aouna’s X post on the news here:

What worries me here is the fact that Southgate hasn’t managed at club level for almost twenty years. That was when he was Middlesbrough boss. That job didn’t go as planned. Is he really ready to manage the biggest club in the country?

I’d be majorly disappointed if this was the choice. His tactical weaknesses have been on full display during his time with the England national team and I just don’t think he’s good enough to go head-to-head with the likes of Pep Guardiola.

My concern is that this does feel like an INEOS move to make, which leads me to believe that these rumours could turn out to be true…
