Man United in contract talks with Jesse Lingard, Ole confirms

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has heaped praise on Jesse Lingard, while adding that the club are in talks over a new contract for the Englishman.

Manchester United Football Club are definitely heading in a positive direction under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

First and foremost, the Baby Faced Assassin has brought the feel-good factor back to the place. Having a happy camp is all-important. The Norwegian has also made some top-quality signings, looking at Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo as the prime examples.

One player whose future remains up in the air is Jesse Lingard. The Englishman spent the second half of last season with this weekend’s opponents, West Ham United.

He’d do a stunning job for David Moyes, though seemingly not enough to force West Ham into buying him permanently, meaning Lingard would return to Old Trafford.

Lingard is still here and playing his part within the first team. Now, Ole has confirmed that the club are in contract talks with the £75k-a-week star (Spotrac), who has one year left on his current contract.

Check out what the gaffer had to say here:

“We see him as a Manchester United player in the future,” said Solskjaer to media, including

“Jesse has come back to us after a great spell at West Ham. He showed his qualities and got back into the England squad.

“We really want to see the best of him this season,”

“He’s got one year left on his contract and the club is talking to him and his dad,” explained Ole.

“We support him and we hope to keep him here with us. He’s a Red through and through.”

I like Lingard and I understand United are looking to protect their asset and ensure the 28-year-old keeps his transfer value in case of a potential sale.

However, I’m not a fan of handing money to fringe players just for the sake of it. Make Lingard earn it this season by playing well when he comes into the side. It really is that simple.

I don’t doubt that Lingard can have a huge part to play this season. He’s an excellent footballer who can go toe-to-toe with the best in the world on his day. I’m just not sure he’ll get the minutes his skill desires here in Manchester.

As a fan, I’d love Lingard to stay and play with a smile on his face. Though I fear he’d be bench-warming more often than not – and that’s not fair on Jesse first and foremost.

If Lingard is content with that then fine, I’d be happy to see him stick around. I just think that now he’s had a taste of regular football with West Ham, that’s what he’s craving on a consistent basis.

Will a new deal happen? We’ll have to wait and see…
