Man United just aren’t giving up in their pursuit of Frenkie de Jong.
I think at this point, we’re all surprised that Manchester United are yet to make any signings.
With so much work needed to overhaul this playing squad, the Old Trafford club have been worryingly stagnant when it comes to bringing players in.
One name consistently linked with a potential Red Devils switch is Frenkie de Jong, though it always felt like the player himself would prefer to stay put at FC Barcelona.
That hasn’t put Erik ten Hag off, though, with United’s new manager pushing hard to reunite with De Jong at Old Trafford.
The latest information in this story comes from Fabrizio Romano. He has taken to Twitter to confirm that United are in ‘direct contact’ with FC Barcelona over the signing of De Jong.
As things stand, there is still no agreement on transfer fee, with the Catalan side confirming they will not part with De Jong for anything less than £74m. They also want that fee to be fully guaranteed.
There’s no doubt that signing De Jong would immediately improve our midfield, though this would be an expensive chunk of the budget to drop on one player.
If De Jong is who the manager wants to begin this new stage in his career, then the club should be pulling out all the stops to get this deal done. The last thing you want is to have Ten Hag working with his third and fourth options in terms of signings, particularly in his debut season.
I still worry about De Jong’s willingness to make the move. Though if the Barca midfielder is giving off positive vibes, then United should do all they can to get this done quickly, in order to prevent other interested parties from making their move.
