Man United are believed to be at the front of the queue to sign Matthijs de Ligt.

Over the last 24 hours or so, Manchester United have been linked with a move to sign Matthijs de Ligt.

The centre-back has been eyed by Erik ten Hag as someone who could potentially replace Raphael Varane, whom a club decision has not been made on at this stage. His contract expires next summer.

Now, Football Transfers have provided an update on De Ligt’s future amid the interest in him.

According to their latest information, Arsenal have joined the Reds in the race to sign the Dutchman, though United are in ‘pole position’ for the signing.

The defender moved to Bayern in 2022, though his exit is now deemed a ‘likely possibility’ after falling down the pecking order for the Bundesliga champions.

De Ligt is said to be ‘unsettled’ in Munich, with sources telling Football Transfers that United’s interest in the centre-back is ‘genuine’. The club have apparently spoken to the player’s reps on more than one occasion.

Arsenal are yet to initiate contact with either the player or Bayern Munich. So far, they’ve only discussed the signing of De Ligt internally, hence, the Reds are currently the frontrunners.

It’s no surprise to see United linked with another player that Ten Hag has worked with previously, with this an increasingly popular trend at the club right now.

We’ve said it before. De Ligt is an excellent defender who would improve this squad. However, he will not come cheaply. He feels like the perfect partner for Lisandro Martinez in the long run, though.
