Man United are one of the clubs who are keeping an eye on Ajax’s Axel Dongen.
Manchester United Football Club have always excelled when it comes to signing young players and giving those guys a real platform to prove their worth.
Erik ten Hag has continued that mantra, offering minutes to the likes of Alejandro Garnacho and, more recently, Facundo Pellistri.
In some positions, this squad is somewhat ageing, whereas others, we’re quite young. One area that still needs addressing is the central striker position. Wout Weghorst is doing his best as a stand-in, though it’s clear he’s likely not going to be the permanent solution.
One man United are now apparently looking at is Ajax’s Axel Dongen.
According to Fabrizio Romano, United are one of the clubs ‘informed’ on the 18-year-old’s situation, who could be signed as a potential free agent.
Ajax are doing their best to tie the young striker down to a new long-term contract, though there’s still no full agreement in place. It’s also worth noting that Ten Hag knows the player from his time over in the Eredivisie with Ajax.
Signing Dongen would allow United to get younger at the position, while also adding more depth to the striker spot.
It goes without saying, this feels like a signing for the future, rather than a focus on the here and now. Dongen isn’t someone who’d be able to lead the line for United from day one, rather, he’d have to be eased in and nurtured over the course of a season or two.
Either way, it’s worth the move as this would be a free transfer, making it a risk-free signing.
