Man United initiate contact to sign Thiago Almada: report

Manchester United have moved in a different, more positive direction under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. That much is obvious.

Credit where it’s due, the Baby Faced Assassin’s Red Devils are focusing on youth, nurturing talent and turning these kids into the superstars of tomorrow.

It’s a mantra that has suited United brilliantly over the years. Why change the habit of a lifetime? Now, a new name has been thrown into the ring.

The story comes from TuttoMercatoWeb, translated by Sport Witness. They link the Old Trafford club with a potential move for Thiago Almada.

Apparently, United have initiated contact to sign the 19-year-old playmaker, or as TMW put it ‘contacts have started’. Sport Witness are quick to report that it’s not clear if the contact is between the two clubs, or United and the player.

Almada, who plays as a winger or a midfielder, has a contract until 2023, with a release clause of £22m (€25m). However, the story reports that United are trying to seal a deal for £15.7m (€18m).

For that sort of fee, it’s definitely worth the risk. After all, United weren’t afraid to spend £10m to sign Hannibal Mejbri who was only 16 at the time. Given Almada’s age, you’d feel he’s at least a few years further on than Mejbri, making it a worthwhile signing.

I’m not going to sit here and tell you all that I’ve seen Almada play as that simply wouldn’t be true. However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has made some excellent signings and we simply have to continue to trust his judgement.
