Manchester United have been installed as the odds-on favourites to sign Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld.
That’s according to the Manchester Evening News, citing bookmakers Coral. The 29-year-old Belgium international is 8/11 to make the move to Old Trafford this summer, with PSG, Barcelona and Juventus also in the running to sign him.
It was just over a week ago when Alderweireld was reportedly ‘getting close’ to joining the Red Devils, and now that interest is seemingly being backed up in the betting market.
Personally, it’s no real surprise to see United linked with a world-class, Premier League proven centre-back. Eric Bailly struggled with injury last term, Victor Lindelof is still adapting, whereas Phil Jones has been his usual, average self. Our only consistent central defender last season was Chris Smalling – and even he has his poor spells.
Alderweireld would be a fantastic coup and Spurs could well be looking to sell him this summer, as next term, a clause in his contract activates – meaning he could leave for just £25million. With Daniel Levy being a proper shrewd businessman, don’t be surprised to see the defender leave.
Although they’ll probably prefer to sell him overseas, Spurs may not have a choice if United come in with the right offer.
