Man United’s interest in Lens full-back, Jonathan Clauss, is real.
Just a couple of days ago, we covered a claim which stated Manchester United were in ‘advanced talks’ to sign Jonathan Clauss from Lens.
The transfer rumour really came out of nowhere and picked up speed pretty quickly. I guess the story makes sense, given United are trying to move on from Aaron Wan-Bissaka. The club would need to replace the Englishman in some capacity, even if Diogo Dalot remains the first-choice selection in that position.
In amongst the game yesterday, we missed some information from journalist Andres Onrubia Ramos, who took to Twitter to share the latest news on a potential Reds move for Clauss.
He confirmed that United’s interest in the 29-year-old is real, though thus far, the only club to make an offer to sign the Frenchman is Marseille. That offer was deemed ‘insufficient’ by Ramos, who stated that no follow-up bid will be made by the Ligue 1 side.
Ramos then went on to claim that the ‘ball is in United’s court’ over the potential signing of Clauss.
Again, you get the feeling that any potential move for Clauss is totally depending on selling a right-back first. Simply because the club cannot enter the campaign with three recognised right-sided defenders on their books as there’s just not enough minutes to go around.
Clauss is someone who would fit the Erik ten Hag system perfectly, while the transfer fee is likely to be under the £10million mark. He’d also bring some much-needed experience to a dressing room jam-packed with younger players.
I still get the impression this deal is some way away from happening, though it could be one to keep an eye on…
