Man United could be looking to address their defensive issues with a move for Jurrien Timber.
There’s can be no doubt that at least one defender will have to be signed this summer. This Manchester United side were amongst the worst in the Premier League when it comes to goals conceded. That absolutely must be addressed.
It makes sense for Erik ten Hag to surround himself with familiarity in order to start things off on the right foot. Enter, Jurrien Timber.
The young defender has come on leaps and bounds under Ten Hag’s tutelage at Ajax, with United linked with a move to bring in the Dutchman pretty regularly.
Well over the last 24 hours, the ever-reliable Fabrizio Romano weighed in on the potential transfer.
He states that United’s interest in the 20-year-old is ‘concrete and serious’, though the deal is still at the ‘early stages’ with Ajax. Timber’s name has already been discussed internally, with Ten Hag eyeing a move for either his fellow countryman or Pau Torres.
The 20-time Premier League champions will not have it all their own way in pursuit of Timber, though, with Ajax looking to offer the defender a new deal in case he doesn’t switch sides this summer.
I think we can all appreciate that this move would be a gamble. Timber is still a baby in centre-back terms, while making the jump up to the Premier League will not be easy.
However, I’m looking at Timber’s versatility as his big selling point. This is someone who can play at centre-back or right-back if required. Both are problem positions for United. Why not kill two birds with one stone during this window where United have several holes to fill?
You also look at Ten Hag’s familiarity with Timber. The new Reds boss knows the defender’s strengths and weaknesses, with the Dutchman already having spent time in his manager’s system.
Honestly, I feel the pros outweigh the cons and this is absolutely a move United should look at making.
