Man United are showing an interest in signing Bart Verbruggen.
Manchester United’s goalkeeping situation has been reliable for many years. David de Gea and Sergio Romero held the job down for the best part of a decade, rarely making mistakes and giving the manager one less position in the team to worry about.
However, De Gea’s recent form has been less than ideal. He’s making more critical mistakes than ever before, with the fans quickly losing patience.
Several goalkeepers have already been linked with a potential United move, while there’s also a chance Dean Henderson could return and stake his claim for regular starts.
The latest from the Manchester Evening News states United’s eyes are lying elsewhere, with Bart Verbruggren a possible option.
Apparently, United are ‘interested’ in signing the 20-year-old goalkeeper, amid uncertainty about De Gea’s number one status going into 2023/24.
Verbruggen currently plies his trade for Anderlecht, having been handed his debut by Vincent Kompany as an eighteen-year-old a couple of seasons ago.
The Dutchman has already received a call-up for Netherlands duty, which is where Erik ten Hag’s interest probably stems from. The United manager is pretty good at recruiting, particularly his own countrymen.
It’s still looking like De Gea will sign a new deal, while United seemingly want to bring someone in to challenge and eventually replace the 32-year-old.
Verbruggen is the right age to do exactly that. Perhaps he’ll sit in behind the Spaniard for a year or so, before picking up the baton when he’s ready. He’d be an insurance policy for De Gea at first, with genuine potential to become the starter for one of the best sides in the country.
