Manchester United Football Club sanctioned an astute loan move for Odion Ighalo back in January, with the Nigerian more than proving his worth during his limited appearances so far.
Whether or not the former Watford striker remains the long-term solution remains to be seen. However, at the very least, it seems as though United are exploring other options.
The story comes from Gazzetta dello Sport (Monday print), translated via Sport Witness, who link attacker Federico Chiesa with a move to Old Trafford.
Apparently, United are amongst the parties interested in the talented 22-year-old forward, whose preference, at least at this time, is to switch AFC Fiorentina for another Italian club.
However, it’s not all bad news as the Reds could force the player into a rethink – depending on what sort of wage United are willing to offer Chiesa.
Chelsea are amongst the other interested parties, though you’d imagine if it comes purely down to wages, United would be able to blow the Stamford Bridge outfit out of the water.
Somewhat expectedly, both Juventus and the Milan clubs are keen on Chiesa, which is where the serious competition will come from. Unless United offer him a life-changing amount of money, it looks as though the forward will be most likely staying in the Serie A.
In this situation, I would urge United to proceed with caution. Solskjaer has done an excellent job at weeding out the players who are only here for the money. It’d be a monumental mistake to go back on that mantra just because Chiesa is young and fits the mould from a player profile standpoint…
