Man United interested in Leon Goretzka: report

Man United have a new midfield transfer target on their radar; Leon Goretzka.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United side are moving forward, though you get the impression they’re still a few pieces away from being perennial title challengers.

Amongst the areas that need addressing is midfield. Don’t get me wrong, I like Scott McTominay, though Nemanja Matic is ageing and who knows what Donny van de Beek brings to the table?

Factor in a Paul Pogba whose contract is up in the air and Solskjaer could well make further investment in the middle of the park.

Well, if Pogba leaves, the Reds have identified Leon Goretzka as a potential target. That’s according to journalist Christian Falk, who stated that United are interested in signing the 26-year-old midfielder, if their number six does depart.

Goretzka, who is now on his way back home following Germany’s EURO 2020 exit, has been a consistent force in the Bundesliga over the last couple of seasons.

The German, like Pogba, is best deployed in that number ten position, allowing him the freedom to get forward wherever possible, without worrying about potential dangers in behind.

My main concern with this move is, why would Bayern let him leave? Goretzka is one of the finest midfielders in the world and surely, the Bavarian giants would want to keep him at the club?

If Goretzka were to leave Bayern, they’d demand a huge transfer fee. Could United afford it? Probably, but I don’t see the club sanctioning another big-money deal along with Jadon Sancho (who seems closer than ever to signing for the Old Trafford club).

Sure, chase this deal if it’s genuinely one that could happen, but please don’t waste too long on it if Bayern are standing firm. I just don’t see any way in which Goretzka would be so easily buyable…
