Amongst Man United’s biggest needs this summer is signing a new centre-half. Enter, Nikola Milenkovic.
As we all know, Harry Maguire needs a new defensive partner. Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly and Axel Tuanzebe all scream inconsistency. That has to change if we’re serious about challenging for major honours.
Raphael Varane is the name that seems to pop up most, though Nikola Milenkovic represents another interesting option.
Reports in Italy, from Corrierre dello Sport (Friday print edition), translated by Sport Witness, claim that United are still interested in the 23-year-old central defender.
It’s stated that the Serbian is ‘talked of a possible exit’ this summer by his current club Fiorentina, allowing the club to get an important ‘economic return’ after having the best part of two seasons ruined by COVID-19.
At this stage, ‘no concrete offers’ have been made to the Serie A club, though with only twelve months remaining on Milenkovic’s current contract, around £30m will be enough to get the deal done.
Milenkovic represents somewhat of an unknown quantity as who knows if his style of play will translate to the Premier League? However, if United are feeling Varane is going to cost too much, £30m for Milenkovic does feel like a gamble worth taking.
At the very least, United need another body that can provide more competition for places. This is someone who has started 30+ games in each of the last three seasons, so the experience is there despite Milenkovic being relatively young in age.
For what it’s worth, I can actually see some truth in this rumour. It does make sense, particularly if United are intent on spending big in other areas (Jadon Sancho, anyone?!).
