Man United are interested in signing Alessandro Bastoni – though they’ll face competition from a fierce rival.
As things stand, Manchester United will finish the season without their best centre-back; Lisandro Martinez. The Argentine has suffered a season-ending injury, while Raphael Varane will also be out for a few weeks.
That leaves Erik ten Hag with only Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire to work with (perhaps we’ll see Luke Shaw back there when he’s fit again, too). That pairing doesn’t fill anyone with confidence going into a crucial stage of the season.
It’s no surprise to learn that United are now being linked with new centre-backs as we approach the summer transfer window. Enter, Alessandro Bastoni.
It’s Fichajes (in Spanish) with the claim. They say that United will face competition with Manchester City to bring in the Inter Milan and Italy centre-back.
Apparently, United (and City) are both interested in signing the 24-year-old, who has gone from strength-to-strength over the last few years.
The young defender has been a mainstay in the Inter side for the last half-decade, showing a real maturity beyond his age and proving himself as one of the best in the business. Make no mistake about it, he’d be an asset to any club in world football.
With Varane getting up there and age, while picking up injury issues, it does make sense for United to find their next stalwart central defender sooner rather than later. Bastoni would certainly fit that bill, though beating out City for his signature may prove to be tough.
A lot comes down to United and their financial firepower. Will they have new owners in place by the time the summer rolls around? Hopefully, as I do not see the Glazer family spending big in a summer where they’re trying to sell up.
