Manchester United are amongst the parties interested in signing RB Leipzig centre-back, Dayot Upamecano.
At this moment in time, Manchester United sit atop the Premier League table. The general feeling amongst supporters is that we’re outperforming expectations at this time, though. Personally, I feel we’re still twelve months away but I’m absolutely loving every second of it.
Amongst the top priorities has to be an elite right-winger, another defensive-midfielder and perhaps a centre-half. That’s where United interest in Dayot Upamecano comes in…
According to Goal, United are amongst a whole host of clubs interested in signing the top-class 22-year-old. Apparently, both Chelsea and Manchester City are also keen, though at this stage, there is no clear frontrunner.
What’s interesting is that it’s claimed the Guinean is likely to leave RB Leipzig this summer as he’d like to take that ‘next step’ in his career. Amongst his goals is joining a side who can regularly compete for Champions League trophies year-in-year-out.
Upamecano would also like to establish himself as a leader in whatever team he joins. In his current contract is a relatively low release clause of £40m, which is a super-realistic fee for a man of his talents.
So what happens now?
Well, it’s going to be an all-out bidding war to sign Upamecano next summer, with United no doubt in that queue.
I guess it all comes down to how well we do this season. Win the title and we’ve given ourselves a great shot at signing him. A top-four finish would be the bare minimum requirement.
A lot of it comes down to Eric Bailly. If the Ivorian stays fit from now until the season’s end, should a centre-back be a top priority? Probably not, but one thing we shouldn’t be hanging our hat on is Bailly’s fitness.
