Manchester United Football Club need a big summer transfer window if they’re to get back in amongst the Premier League title race. Today, Idrissa Gueye is the latest name to be linked with an Old Trafford move.
The story comes from Le10Sport, who state that United are ‘interested’ in signing the 30-year-old defensive midfielder, who had a spell in the Premier League with Everton.
Apparently, it’s ‘clearly not impossible’ that Gueye moves back across the English channel from PSG back to an English club, with United amongst those interested in signing the man from Senegal.
What’s also interesting is that PSG Sporting Director, Leonardo, is ‘open’ to moving Gueye on this summer.
No transfer fee is mentioned, but you’d imagine for a player of his age, Gueye wouldn’t be overly expensive. The problem is, United would only get a few years use out of him if the signing is made.
So where would Gueye fit in?
Well, Nemanja Matic is going to be the defensive-midfield starter, particularly after signing a new contract not too long ago.
Then you have Scott McTominay who is always improving and working hard to get regular starts.
At best, I’d see Gueye as a bit-part player who can drop in and out of the side when needs be. He’d be supremely useful in those tight-knit games that are won and lost in the middle of the park, as Gueye brings the combination of McTominay’s energy and Matic’s physicality.
If United can get him on cheap wages with a small transfer fee, it’s definitely an option worth exploring. Squad depth is important if the Reds are to compete on all fronts, and with Gueye’s Premier League experience, he could slot right into the team from the get-go.
