Man United are seemingly keen on further strengthening their midfield, with Inter Milan’s Nicolo Barella on the radar.
It feels weird, but we’re now less than two months away from the transfer window once again opening. With that in mind, the rumour mill is starting to fire up once again…
Today’s story comes from FC Inter News, who shed light on the Red Devils’ keenness in Barella.
Apparently, United are interested in signing the £75k-a-week star (wfoot). However, they’ll face competition. Arsenal, FC Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are also keeping tabs on the 23-year-old. That alone should tell you everything you need to know about his talents.
Barella has put in some mightily impressive performances for Antonio Conte’s side recently, which is undoubtedly where the interest in the Italian stems from.
This isn’t the first time United have been linked with Barella, either. Back in 2018 when Jose Mourinho was manager, the Old Trafford club displayed an interest in the-then 20-year-old Italian. United have been scouting the player for a while, so I don’t doubt their knowledge in regards to Barella’s talents.
So where does Man United interest in Barella stem from?
There are still doubts about Paul Pogba’s long-term future at Old Trafford, leaving United with no choice but to identify ready-made replacements. Barella is certainly that.
In terms of a transfer fee, Barella wouldn’t be cheap. Inter paid £22.5m to sign him from Atalanta a year ago, while he’s improved since then and still has four years left on his contract. It’s also worth noting that the Serie A club are trying to offer him a payrise, presumably to protect their asset even further.
I’d be surprised if we saw any real movement on this one during the January transfer window. Rather, this feels like a deal United could look at next summer. Even then, Inter aren’t going to want to let go of one of their key players.
