Man United interested in signing Lille defender Sven Botman: report

Man United are the latest club to show an interest in Lille defender, Sven Botman.

This season, the Red Devils’ issues have certainly come on the defensive side of the football. Victor Lindelof has continued to be inconsistent, while Harry Maguire’s off-field issues are still looming over his head.

Sure, Eric Bailly has looked back to his best recently, though we’d be foolish to expect anything other than an injury happening at some point soon.

It seems as though United are preparing for that inevitability, too. The story comes from The Sunday World, who writes that United have joined in the race to sign the emerging centre-back, Sven Botman.

Botman, 20, currently plies his trade for Lille in Ligue 1 – and he’s come on leaps and bounds over the last few months. So-much-so that Liverpool are also interested in the Dutchman.

The centre-half only cost Lille just over £7m, now, the Ligue 1 outfit could be set to earn four times that amount, in a deal that could cost the potential buyer €32m (£28.5m).

Would a Man United move for Sven Botman make sense?

At this point, I’m not sure. I still get the feeling that United need an experienced defender rather than another young up-and-comer. We have Axel Tuanzebe and Teden Mengi coming through who can both fill that role.

Personally, I’d much prefer to see the Reds go after someone with proven experience. Someone who can stay fit over the course of a full season. Someone who can have a Virgil van Dijk-esque impact.

Speaking of Liverpool, their need for a defender is greater than ours. I would imagine they’d be willing to pay over the odds to sign someone like Botman, whereas United have other areas in the squad that need addressing first…
