Man United could make their move to sign Wolves midfielder, Matheus Nunes.
Manchester United and signing a new midfielder feels like the early frontrunner for the ongoing saga of the summer. We’re in April and it already feels like every central player has been linked with a Reds switch.
This week, a new name has been thrown into the mix; Wolves midfielder, Matheus Nunes.
It’s Football Insider with the claim. They state that the 24-year-old midfielder is ‘on the radar’ of Man United, ahead of the summer transfer window.
To further add fuel to the fire, it’s claimed that Erik ten Hag is ‘desperate’ to strengthen the midfield this summer, with Nunes on the shortlist of possible signings.
Nunes has impressed since signing for Wolves last summer, playing in a number of different midfield roles since arriving at the Midlands club. That versatility could be a key asset for the United gaffer should they firm up their interest with an official bid.
The fact that Nunes only arrived at Molineux last summer could make things complicated, though if they’re forced into selling, you’d expect they’ll want a nice profit on the £38m they paid to sign him in 2022.
With Scott McTominay continuing to be linked with a possible exit, someone like Nunes could prove to be the perfect replacement for United. The 11-cap Portugal international has Premier League experience, and no doubt his countrymen, Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot, would help him settle in.
This would be a smart piece of business by Ten Hag, though it does feel like it hinges on generating the funds for this move by selling players first. If the Reds can get decent fees for players like McTominay, then I’d give the club a decent shot at getting this done.
