Man United interested in Yan Sommer as backup goalkeeper

Man United are looking at Yan Sommer, as a potential back-up for David de Gea.

Erik ten Hag still needs reinforcements in pretty much every area of the pitch. Sadly, Manchester United are in an absolute mess at the moment and it’s pretty painful to see.

Some decisions made this summer have been baffling. Putting James Garner up for sale, while we’re forced to watch Scott McTominay every week, sums up the current situation.

Allowing Dean Henderson to leave, only for him to save a penalty as his Nottingham Forest kept a clean sheet, while David de Gea continues to stink up the joint, is another glaring error.

Well, United find themselves with a goalkeeping void to fill. The club needs someone who can challenge De Gea for starts over the course of the 2022/23 campaign.

Enter, Yan Sommer.

It’s Fabrizio Romano with the claim, as he confirms that United are ‘interested’ in signing the 33-year-old. He’s one of three options on the Reds’ list of potential shot-stoppers.

As things stand, there is also interest from other Premier League clubs, while there’s still a chance Sommer, who has one year left on his current deal, remains at Borussia Monchengladbach.

Sommer is experienced and a top quality goalkeeper within his own right. His ability to play with the ball at feet is a huge factor, while the Switzerland international also has no qualms with coming out and claiming crosses.

I’d absolutely love for this move to happen. I genuinely believe Sommer is someone who could take over as the number one pretty quickly, while Henderson’s chances at coming back to Old Trafford are now pretty slim following his scathing attack on the club via the media.
